How workshops can help you earn a full-time salary as a health coach

Public speaking is an excellent marketing tool for health coaches. Whether you do them in person or virtually, and whether you have a massive audience or are just starting out with a small list of friends and family, workshops can bring in a significant amount of your health-coaching salary. Some people make it their whole business! Regardless of whether you want to do workshops full-time or not, they can lead to major sources of income for you. Here’s how:

Income stream 1: corporate wellness workshops

With corporate wellness, the companies pay you directly to deliver your workshop as a perk to their employees. Many have budgets specifically for wellness initiatives or other activities that enhance the workplace culture. Because you’re getting paid by corporations directly, you don’t have to worry about people’s individual financial situations, having to check with their husbands, waffling on their decision, and never getting back to you.

I do most of my workshops in corporate settings rather than for my own audience because it offers more dependable income and you get a higher return on your investment. You can make hundreds of dollars for one hour of your time. I’m all about what brings me the biggest return and so companies that budget for wellness programs are where to look (learn how to find them with this training).

This is especially helpful during the holidays (and the pandemic, honestly) — when in individual people might be tightening their purse strings — because it’s the company who pays you, not the employees.

Income stream 2: corporate packages

Rather than single workshops, you can sell multiple as a series instead. One-off events are perfectly fine and you’ll do them more often than not, but you can also save some time and secure more income for yourself if you sell your workshops as a package.

I usually discount my packages about 10% or so, depending on how much I’m charging the client initially. You’ll want to give them some sort of incentive to book multiple sessions with you, so the discount is always helpful.

Don’t be discouraged if you’re only booking single workshops. Not every company has a budget for regular wellness workshops (though ask around in your network to find the ones that do!). Sometimes, one-offs can turn into a series if there’s positive feedback from the employees. Sometimes it just takes a little getting to know you.

Income stream 3: warmed-up coaching clients

I love corporate wellness because it can turn into a double whammy of getting paid to present a workshop and then getting paid by a participant for coaching! Remember the difference between a workshop and a webinar; there is no hard selling in your workshop, so it’s a more relaxed environment for people to get to know you and warm up to you.

Workshops can serve as an audition of sorts for potential new clients. They get to know you, they get familiar with you and your personality, they see how you answer questions and you show off what an expert you are. Coaching clients may book directly from your workshops if they’re hooked from the start, or they may be the type that needs to follow along for a while before making a decision. You may get Instagram followers and newsletter signups instead, then maybe they book with you months down the road.

It’s a win-win-win!

Your workshops can be multifaceted marketing tools appealing to both corporate and private clients. They’re a win-win-win all around and if you strategize right (deciding how much money you want to make and working backward to engineer it into reality), you can turn your events into opportunities to increase your health coaching salary.
